Deep Thought

Sitting in Starbucks the other day, I thought: Shouldn't there be an apostophe in Starbucks - like Starbuck's? The name is based on Captin Ahab's first mate in the 1851 novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville. He's the one who tries to stop Ahab's obsessive hunt for Moby Dick. He dies at the end. So, don't they mean a place of Starbuck's, and not a multitude of starbucks.

I wonder how many other people have wondered this.

I always thought that the owner of that coffee chain was a mermaid named Starbuck. Actually I thought that the coffee drinks were called starbucks. No, I really actually thought that Starbucks was the name of the god of stimulants.

Did I mention I love you? Thanks for inspiring a blog out of me.

Another fun fact - That mermaid logo used to have bare breasts, but as Starbuck's got more and more popular and opened stores in more breast-unfriendly places, the logo changed so that her hair covered her front. Very interesting.
